The Employee Assistance Professionals Association will be conducting an election during 2010 for all Board of Directors open positions to serve from October 2010 through October 2012. Nominations are now being accepted through June 30, 2010. Only active members may nominate themselves or other deserving members. The election will again be conducted online, with the voting period running from July 15, 2010 through August 13, 2010. Installation of new Directors will take place at the Tampa Conference, October 8, 2010.

Every business owner desires productive and content employees. With a slowdown in the economy and discussions of war, gas prices on the upswing again, the financial crisis and increased layoffs, many Americans may be experiencing high levels of stress.

One of the biggest strains employees currently are dealing with is the ongoing recession. Whether an employee has been personally affected, everyone is feeling some tension from the recession. When asked about the recent financial crisis, almost half of Americans said they are increasingly stressed about their ability to provide for their families basic needs, according to the American Psychological Association’s 2008 Stress in America Survey. The survey reported money as the top source of stress for eight out of 10 Americans.

Losing your job can make you feel lousy. Whether you’re fired or laid-off, joining the ranks of the unemployed is not exactly a feel-good event. You don’t need a study to tell you that.

But what impact does losing a job have on your health? Could a layoff send a perfectly healthy person into a downward spiral of sickness? It’s possible, says Kate Strully, a sociologist at State University of New York in Albany. In her new study published in the journal Demography, Strully analyzed a variety of job loss situations — including being fired or laid off or losing a job after the entire company shut down — and found that job loss may indeed trigger serious physical and physiological illness.

MONDAY, Dec. 1 (HealthDay News) — Psychiatric disorders are common among young adults in the United States, but few seek treatment, a new report shows.

To reach this finding, U.S. researchers analyzed data from more than 5,000 respondents, aged 19 to 25, who took part in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.

The study found that 45.8 percent of the 2,188 college students and 47.7 percent of the young adults not in college met the criteria for at least one psychiatric disorder, but only 25 percent of those with disorders sought treatment over a one-year period.
