EAPrefer Concerns

The National Association of Social
Workers (NASW) has launched a service called EAPrefer, which it describes as “a
revolutionary new program connecting Employee Assistance Professionals with the
Network Providers who need them.”

At first glance, this may appear to be
a positive development for the EA profession. However, a closer look reveals
that the EAPrefer materials infer clearly that a social work degree and license,
along with appropriate professional liability insurance, qualifies a clinician
to be considered and promoted as an “employee assistance professional.”

Many EAPA members have expressed serious concern about this to the EAPA
Board and EACC, and we, in turn, have tried to reach out to NASW to attempt to
develop a cooperative approach that accomplishes their goals, but also respects
the importance and distinctiveness of the employee assistance body of knowledge
and the CEAP credential.

EAPA GNO will hold its next meeting on April 15, 2011. The chapter business meeting will begin at 12:00 followed by a presentation by Kathy Eaton, LPC on Ethics & Business Conduct for EAP Professionals. The meeting will be held at Townsend located at 3600 Prytania St. Suite 72 New Orleans, LA. 70115. This presentation is worth 2.0 PDHs. Scientists say having a bad job can be worse for your mental health than having no job at all.
Australian researchers surveyed thousands of people. Unemployed workers who were able to find find a job they considered good – saw an improvement in mental health.
But when someone got a job they viewed as poor – it was actually more detrimental to their mental health than remaining unemployed.

This CNN Health artical provides helpful and useful information on our aging workforce and the possible increase of dementia in the workplace. This artical reports given the aging population and the weak economy — which is prompting older people who do have jobs to stay in them — the problem will likely only get worse. More than 5 million people in the U.S. have Alzheimer’s disease, and this number will quadruple by 2050, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.
